Piano Improvisation Workshop
Six Week Course Beginning March 16
The Piano Improvisation Workshop begins on March 16. In this six week course, I’m looking forward to sharing the results of my more than four decades worth of experience as a Jazz pianist, composer and teacher with you.
The course is recommended for everyone who plays the piano, amateur or professional. My interest is in helping you understand how music works in a hands on, practical way. Improvisation and composition are topics that I believe should be included in any music education curriculum. If you understand how to create your own music, a whole new world opens up for you. Not only will you gain the satisfaction and joy of creating your own music, but your understanding and appreciation of the music that you enjoy listening to will also grow.
I’ve been teaching, and constantly working to improve my teaching, for decades. I always strive to meet students where they are in their development and help them progress in the direction they desire. Every student comes with a different level of experience, and a unique way of learning. One of my main concerns with this course has been presenting this information in a way that will reach a broad spectrum of people who embody all of these differences. I also hope to inspire you to want to continue to learn and develop your abilities.
I think it’s important that potential students of this course know that you will be able to reach out to me and ask questions. There is a chat in the course itself, and students can reach out by email with questions throughout the six weeks of the course. You can reach out to me now if you have any questions about whether you think this course is a good fit for you.

It’s interesting to me that simply conceiving of and planning this course has already influenced my private teaching. It’s becoming even more efficient and effective. I always tell my students that I’m learning more from them than they are from me! It’s a continuously inspiring process.
In this course, I’ll be coming at the information from several different directions. Each class will present a different aspect of the whole picture. For example, the first lesson we will learn to improvise over a blues chord progression. In another lesson, we’ll talk about how to write melodies over basic chord progressions. In another lesson, we’ll have an introduction to Jazz harmony.
In this way, we’ll be sure to present something for everyone, no matter where you are in your development. At the same time, by presenting an introduction to a variety of basic material, you can get a better sense of where your interests lie, and how to move forward on your own.
Even if you can’t attend live, all episodes will be recorded and are always available for your review. Pdfs of the material will also be available.
And remember, I’m always available to assist you on your journey going forward!
See you inside the course!
Keith
