Tune Talk - Dance Noir, Part 2
An arrangement, with improvisation.
Hi folks. This is the follow up to my recent post featuring this tune. I’ve arranged it to have two sections for improvisation. I’m attaching the PDF again if you want to follow along as I play it.
I’ve also attached a leadsheet with the solo changes, above. I talk through it on the first short video. Here’s how it works.
First, we play the whole tune down. At the end, we go to the solo changes. the solo changes are over the E-7 phrygian vamp, and the Ab-7 phrygian vamp. Each of the vamps is introduced by an interlude, which is a short section taken from the tune itself. The soloist is free to improvise as long as they like, then cue the entrance to the next section. The last section is simply the last four bars of the tune, which leads back to the top of the tune.
If there are more than one soloist, each one can take a different vamp section to solo over. For example, sax solo over E-7, piano solo over Ab-7, etc.
After the solos, we return to the top and play the whole tune down a final time. It’s not too complicated if you follow along with the attached lead sheets.
I hope you enjoy it and find it interesting! Let me know in the comments.
